A slow PC is not always a processor problem
Before writing off a computer as old or underpowered, it is worth checking the parts and software that commonly create severe slowdowns.
Old or failing hard drive

Common questions
Computer repair FAQ
Can an SSD make an old computer faster?
Often, yes. If the system still uses a mechanical hard drive and the CPU/RAM are otherwise adequate, an SSD can greatly improve startup and program-loading times. We still check whether the rest of the machine is worth upgrading first.
Does a very slow computer mean the hard drive is failing?
Not always. Low RAM, a busy or damaged drive, Windows corruption, malware, overheating and startup software can all cause severe slowdowns. Diagnosis helps separate them.
Can my files be kept during a repair?
Often, but it depends on the fault and storage condition. Tell us if the data is important before approving reinstall, reset or drive-replacement work.
Do you repair desktop motherboards?
We can assess the fault, but complex desktop motherboard repair is often not economical. Where a compatible replacement board is available, motherboard replacement can be the better-value and more reliable option.
Can programs be moved to a new computer like normal files?
Not always. Personal files can usually be copied when readable, but installed programs often depend on Windows, registry entries, licences and supporting files and may need to be reinstalled or migrated using a suitable method.
Should I keep using a clicking hard drive?
No. If a drive is clicking, disconnecting or repeatedly becoming unreadable, continued use can make data loss worse. Stop unnecessary use and tell us that data recovery may be a priority.
